CONGRATULATIONS to Kenneth Coleman

The EPHB Music Award Board is thrilled to announce our 2026 winner, Kenneth Coleman III from Nansemond River High School!

As many instrumentalists, do, Kenneth began his music journey in sixth grade, playing alto saxophone. The wealth of his experiences and opportunities in High School, however, are what centered music in his life. “Playing alto saxophone isn’t just something I do for my school’s band,” he says, “It’s a form of expression and connecting with people.”

Along with being first chair in Nansemond River’s Concert and Jazz Bands, he was a member of the All-City Band in 2024 and 2025 and was designated Best Alto Sax by the VBODA in 2025. He plays for his community in holiday Church services, and supports his fellow musicians by giving advice, demonstrating parts, and encouraging younger players. “Overall,” he says, “I use music as a way to connect with people, serve my community, and positively represent the programs I’m a part of.”

Kenneth’s sponsor, Dr. Edward J Woodis, says Kenneth “is a key part of my symphonic band and jazz band. He always encourages his peers to step outside the box and perform beyond their level of comfort.  He is a true inspiration.” The Board agrees.

Kenneth will use his $500 scholarship to support his future musical journey while attending Hampton University in the Fall, where he will major in Music Performance.
